Find your fit.

“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.”

Patrick Lencioni - The Dysfunctions of a Team

You are unique and I will make the argument that out of 7.88 billion people on this earth, there probably isn’t someone exactly like you. As much as that may be true, it doesn’t mean you are not similar to millions or billions of other people. What makes us similar are the elements of values and culture. These two elements can provide us a fit within societies and for the purpose of this email, professional teams.

If you have been lucky in your professional career, you have been a part of a high performing team. High performing teams are rare, can be brief if not fostered properly, and can build life long relationships. They are what we all strive for, and as leaders, should constantly cultivate the environment in which they thrive.

From my experience, thriving high performance teams don’t happen by accident, are created with multiple variables, and will not last if leadership doesn’t ardently support the culture.

In this newsletter, my focus is on culture and values. The leading article breaks down the Miami Heat and how their culture works to overcome talent gaps with grit. I’ve also included an outstanding interview by Adam Grant with Admiral Linda Fagan where they touch on organizational values.

Culture and values are high performance team elements that should be constantly worked on. Stay sharp this summer and propel your teams through the 2nd half of 2023.

Sincerely,

Ryan
